Asking a single AI model to brainstorm architecture, write clean TypeScript, design responsive CSS, write unit tests, and perform security reviews guarantees mediocrity. Cognitive drift occurs when one model attempts conflicting tasks within one context window.

The solution is a multi-agent workflow: small, focused subagents with restricted tools, distinct system prompts, and clear definitions of done.

The Core 4-Role Agency Pattern

  • 1. The System Architect: Has read-only permissions. Designs the data model, API contracts, and file map before code is written.
  • 2. The Feature Implementer: Has file write permissions. Receives the architect spec and implements exact functions.
  • 3. The Test Runner: Executes npx vitest or npx tsc --noEmit. Flags regressions without touching application logic.
  • 4. The Reviewer: A read-only diff inspector that checks security rules, style compliance, and edge cases before git commit.

Deterministic Handoff Protocols

Subagents should communicate via structured artifacts rather than conversational chat. The Architect produces a checklist artifact, the Implementer checks off items, and the Reviewer approves the diff.

# Example orchestrator task structure
1. Architect: Output ARCHITECTURE.md spec
2. User: Review and click Proceed
3. Implementer: Execute Step 1
4. Verifier: Run automated tests
5. Git: Commit verified change with clean message
