The Free Open-Source Audio & Voice Cloning Stack You Can Run on Your Laptop
How to set up F5-TTS, Voicebox, and ChatTTS locally to clone voices and generate high-quality speech without cloud API fees.
Voice cloning used to require cloud GPUs, proprietary enterprise contracts, and strict character quotas. Today, modern diffusion and autoregressive audio models run comfortably on a standard consumer laptop.
Whether you are generating voiceovers for YouTube videos, building NPC dialogue for a game, or authoring customer service voice agents, here is the complete local voice stack that costs zero dollars in API fees.
Why Run Local Voice Models?
- Zero Character Billing: No recurring charges whether you generate 100 words or 50,000 words.
- Complete Privacy: Audio files and transcripts never leave your hard drive.
- Offline Reliability: Your build pipelines and render scripts execute without internet latency or rate limits.
Setting Up F5-TTS in 3 Steps
F5-TTS uses non-autoregressive flow matching to generate expressive speech from a 3 to 10 second reference recording.
# 1. Create a dedicated virtual environment
python3 -m venv voice-env
source voice-env/bin/activate
# 2. Install F5-TTS
pip install f5-tts torch torchaudio soundfile
# 3. Run inference
f5-tts_infer-cli \
--ref_audio reference.wav \
--ref_text "The exact words spoken in reference.wav" \
--gen_text "The new sentence you want spoken in that voice."The Practical Rules for Clean Audio
To get studio-grade results without robotic artifacts, follow these rules:
- Record in 44.1kHz or 48kHz mono WAV. Do not feed compressed MP3 or phone voice memos with heavy background echo.
- Match the punctuation: The model uses commas and periods to pace breath and sentence cadence.
- Normalize levels: Run audio through ffmpeg with loudnorm before feeding it into the inference script.
The Honest Limitations
Local inference on an Apple M-series chip will take approximately 1.2x to 1.8x the length of the generated audio (e.g., a 10-second audio clip takes ~15 seconds to generate). On an Nvidia RTX 3060 or higher, it runs at 0.3x real-time.
